As the hospitality industry continues its search for new ways to enhance the guest experience, Hotels.com is in the process of testing a new mobile app allowing guests to check in and out of their rooms electronically with their smartphones.

While the concept is certainly nothing new, with Hilton Worldwide and several other hotel companies rolling out similar technology in recent years, by potentially expanding it to Hotels.com's partner hotels it could reach a wider range of travelers.

Tnooz.com reported a prototype of the app was unveiled at a conference in Las Vegas earlier this week, where Hotels.com's president Johan Svanstrom indicated "quite a few hotel chains" have shown interest in the technology.

Since the app is still in the trial phase, Svanstrom doesn't expect it to be launched for real world use until March 2017.

As previously mentioned, Hilton pioneered digital check-in in 2014 and launched its Digital Key feature in August 2015, allowing members of its HHonors loyalty program to bypass the front desk and unlook their room with their smartphone.

Hyatt Hotels also appears poised to roll out a revolutionary new check-in system at its properties around the world in the near future. This past summer it was reported the Chicago-based company was developing a new system using tablets designed to improve the guest experience while at the same time helping boost hotel efficiency.
